Criticism Exercise
All paintings copy of images came from https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/learn-about-art/guide-to-impressionism/guide-to-impressionism due to unable to take any pictures at all in
the Monet room
Artist is Monet
Bathers at LA Grenouillere
Oil
Year 1869
This painting actually reminds me of the train station in Chicago. Not only by pictures I have seen but actually
from being there before. It has an
opening that is large like in the picture with many different tracks. All though there are not people walking
across the tracks like in the painting that was my first thought when I saw
it. The blue open skies with white
blotches can be clouds but also like how the darker blue by the train
represents the steam coming from the train as it is pulling into the
station. It brings balance and distinctiveness
to the painting to see the liveliness of motion.
Artist Monet
The Water-Lily Pond
Oil
Year 1899
This painting says to me getting married and taking pictures in such a
beautiful surrounding. The beautiful moss
hanging from the trees with many different greens to accent the lilies and the
bushes coming up from the water. The
whites pinks and purples give an appeal of the flowers and the lilies floating
on the water with also enough color whites, browns and greens on the bridge to
show the reflection and hint of reflection from sunlight rather than having
just a solid colored bridge it shows the definition and reflection in the
railings and definition of the wood
Artist Monet
Snow Scene at Argentueil
Oil
1875
This painting is beautiful structure of snow after a winter storm. I love how you see the snow in clumps just as
if you were looking out a window and see the depth of the snow in different
spots as the snow goes into the lake to the left with the dingy still sitting
in probably the frozen water. The look
of snow on the roofs of the homes lots of blues, greens, and greys in the
distance you can see the mountain with light browns used for trees in the
distance along the edge of the mountain at the bottom.
What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?
The walls that hold the
artwork act as a blank canvas a background for the paintings. All the gallery is clean and simple for not
to take away from any of the artwork or draw attention away from any of
it. You really honestly don’t look at
anything else except the artwork unless other wise asked to for maybe a class
or observance techniques. Pieces of each
artists is kept together and makes it easier to see the differences and what is
so special about each artist and piece of art.
